Next Gen Hyundai Verna Launch: Impacting Mid-Size Sedan Segment?

Hyundai India has finally launched its most awaited car, the facelifted Hyundai Verna. Belonging to the mid-size sedan segment, the car had created a lot of excitement among the potential customers even before it was officially announced.

India is a huge market for the mid-sized sedans, which equally have products from the domestic as well as international manufacturers. It is a highly competitive segment, where the companies keep trying to come up with new launches every now and then in order to strengthen their position in the segment. Every new launch in the segment further increases the intense competition among the rivals. Currently, this segment is dominated by the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Honda City, but the launch of the new Verna is expected to significantly impact their positions.

Amidst intense competition, Verna is expected to come out as a standout performer, as it certainly has an edge over the other cars in the segment with a fresh design and some of the first-in-segment features. It looks stronger on many fronts on papers, but the actual effectiveness will only be revealed once it starts running on the road.

Here we discuss how impactful the features of the New Hyundai Verna will be for other cars in the mid-size Sedan segment.

Design and styling

The Indian-spec model is built on the new K2 platform and is freshly designed using Hyundai’s Fluidic design concept that gives it a contemporary look to boast off. It will flaunt the company’s signature Cascade grille with chrome outline and newly designed projector LED headlamps with DRLs. The side profile looks appealing with cuts and creases at the right places. The roofline slopes down at the C-pillars to resemble a coupe for an improved aerodynamic feature. The rear side features LED tail lights with a dual-tone bumper. The top-end variants will get the 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, while the base models will run on the 15-inch silver wheels.

The new generation model certainly has an edge over the rivals in the segment with an improved design, which is a real eye-catcher. Maruti Ciaz offers 15-inch alloy wheels on its top model, whereas Verna sports 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels which give it a sportier look.

Interior features

The fifth generation Verna offers a premium looking cabin featuring some key features for the comfort and convenience of the passengers. The interior of the model is redesigned to boast with some first-in-class features to have an edge over the rivals in the segment. The dashboard looks superior in style with the dual-tone colour theme of black and beige. The high-end models feature a 7.0-inch infotainment system supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and offers an advanced AVN system. The top-end model features some of the best equipment and accessories like USB, Bluetooth, six airbags, ABS, Electric sunroof and cruise control.

Engine Specifications

The next-gen Verna will sport the same engine which used to power the previous model. The petrol variant offers a 1.6-litre VTVT engine, which churns out a maximum power of 121 bhp at 6,400 revolutions per minute against a peak torque of 151 Nm at 4,850 revolutions per minute. On the other side, the diesel engine comes with a 1.6-litre U2 CRDi engine which will generate a maximum power output of 126 bhp at 4,000 revolutions per minute against a peak torque of 260 Nm at 3,000 revolutions per minute. Both the engines will be mated to either a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Though it shares the same engine mechanism, it offers a better fuel-efficiency than its predecessor. It delivers a fuel-efficiency of 15.92 kmpl and 17.07 kmpl for the automatic and manual petrol engines respectively, while the diesel counterparts return a mileage of 21.02 kmpl and 24.75 kmpl. The fuel economy is superior to most of the models in thissegment but is lower than the Maruti Ciaz which will have an edge over the new vehicle.

Hyundai Verna vs others

The new generation Hyundai Verna price is starting from Rs. 8 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base variant and goes up to Rs. 12.62 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the top-end trim.Though the price is higher than some of the models in the segment, it is still a good deal to have considering the classy style and latest features it offers. Once launched, it will compete with the likes of Maruti Ciaz, Honda City, VW Vento and Skoda Rapid in the segment.

The external aesthetics, advanced and first-in-segment features with a decent power mechanism make it a strong rival for other cars in the segment. It seems like a worthy one and will further intensify the competition, opening doors for more upcoming launches with better features.
